——A Holistic Theoretical Imagination of Media Studies

Abstract： This article combs and analyzes the academic thoughts of the worldly renowned media theorist Douglas Kellner, showing his cutting-edge thinking on cultural studies and communication studies from the perspective of critical social theory. Kellner believes that the long-standing tensions between communication research and cultural research will eventually lead to a crisis that affects both disciplines. A comprehensive research approach that integrates the Frankfurt School and the core perspectives of cultural studies may bridge the above differences. He advocates the establishment of a comprehensive research approach for coordinating media research, communication research and cultural studies, and promoting the holistic studies of cultural production and political economy, cultural texts and audience acceptance in research practices.
